Ludhiana to Establish Its First ESIC-Managed Medical College by 2025

Ludhiana—Ludhiana will soon establish its first government medical college, as the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) plans to open an institute in the city.

The college will be built on 25 acres of land, and ESIC is currently collaborating with the district administration to secure a suitable location. Recently, a delegation from ESIC met with Additional Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Bains to discuss land acquisition, as reported by the Hindustan Times. After meeting with ESIC officials, ADC Bains stated that the administration will soon finalize a plot for the medical college.

Additionally, the college plans to launch with a 300-bed ESIC hospital by the next academic year, 2025. Officials noted that once the new building is completed, the college will operate a separate hospital with 500 beds.

In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Rakesh Kumar said, “We plan to start the college next academic year from our hospital. As soon as the land is acquired and the building is constructed, we will build a separate hospital.”

A recent meeting discussed the establishment of the government medical college under ESIC. During the meeting, ESIC Regional Director Rakesh Kumar announced that the corporation has committed to opening 10 new medical colleges across the state, including one in Ludhiana. Currently, ESIC operates seven hospitals in the state, located in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Mandi Gobindgarh, and Mohali.

The decision to establish the first ESIC-run government medical college in Ludhiana is based on the region’s significant industrial presence. This initiative will support insured industrial workers earning less than ?21,000 per month by providing healthcare benefits.

Once established, the medical college will be the first government tertiary care healthcare facility in the district. Currently, there are about 1.7 million ESIC beneficiaries across the district.
