Notification:
Karnataka- Despite last year’s storm over the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) the Karnataka Cabinet has passed a resolution against it.
The government opined that the NEET examination system has very negative impacts and largely reduces the medical education of the poor children in rural areas. It not only renders the school education system ineffective but also strips the state government of its rights to admit students to state-managed medical colleges. Thus, the government seeks removal of this system as per a PTI report.
The Karnataka Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently gave its nod for scrapping of the NEET in Karnataka. Rather the NEET exam, the Cabinet has decided to either come up with a medical entrance examination for only the under graduate and post graduate programs or to turn the NEET into the Common Entrance Test (CET) of medical students.
The Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar earlier commented, “The NEET exam has to be stopped immediately and the union government must permit states to set their exams. Karnataka has built colleges, but the NEET exam benefits North Indian students and deprives our own students. We all have to unitedly fight against this.”
The campaign to oppose NEET in Karnataka started following the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s resolution against the NEET examination and the plea to the union government to permit state governments to conduct the medical admission tests on the basis on class 12 standards as was earlier done before the introduction of NEET.
Medical Dialogues CG earlier reported that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin tabled the resolution following a paper leak outrage in the NEET-UG 2024 and the sudden postponement of the NEET-PG 2024 examination.
"Tamil Nadu has consistently said that we do not want NEET. Now people understand that NEET is an unfair test, and it is so saddening that so many students are losing out on so much because of NEET. Globally, we do not want NEET to continue being present and so the desperate need for its eradication. We have passed a resolution in our Assembly, besides, it is pending with the President for his signature,” Kanimozhi said.
